Projection varies by system, though larger units commonly reach around three to four metres. Longer projections put more load on the arms and fixings, which is why the supporting structure sets the practical limit.
It's safer retracted when nobody is around to react to changing weather, since wind is the main risk to the arms and fabric. A wind sensor handles this automatically where the awning is motorised.
