Deciding on fabric and operation
Four choices shape how a roller blind performs day to day.

Openness factor.Screen fabrics are rated by how much of the weave is open, which determines how much view and glare each one lets through.

Roll direction.Standard roll brings the fabric down the back of the tube, while reverse roll clears an obstruction such as a window handle.

Operation.Chain, spring-assisted and motorised all suit different situations, particularly where a blind is out of easy reach.

It's the percentage of the weave that's open space rather than yarn, usually between one and ten per cent. A lower number blocks more glare and heat, a higher number preserves more of the view.
Loose cords and chains are a strangulation hazard, which is why Australian regulations require them to be secured with a tensioner or cleat fixed to the wall. Motorised or spring-operated blinds avoid the issue entirely.
