What separates a plantation shutter from any other is the width of the louvre. Broader blades mean fewer of them across the same window, so there's less structure interrupting the glass and more to see through when they're open. Mid-range louvres around 89mm suit most residential windows, balancing view and proportion. Very large windows carry wider blades comfortably, while small openings usually look better with narrower ones.
Custom framing follows shapes that a rectangular fitting can't, including arches, raked gables and triangular openings. Fixed louvres are sometimes used in the shaped section where an operating mechanism won't fit.
A visible rod runs down the centre of the panel and moves all the louvres together when pushed. A hidden tilt links the louvres from behind, so the panel face stays uninterrupted and any louvre can be used to adjust the set.
